The first time I heard The P Man (Paul Howland) was on ReactFM when he released his React special mix with all talent from that station… He had a ton of originals and some great exclusive tunes from a lot of the talented people who are now starting to blow up. He now has a weekly show on Cyba.fm, Tuesdays at 2PM PST.

I first met Paul at the Joe Nice edition of Dub Smugglers, up in front the whole show and sportin CDs of original tunes to give out to the DJs. He’s a cool, down to earth guy, with great taste in tunes and always down to shoot the shit with whoever’s around. Paul’s got tons of vinyl, ranging from super dubbed out deepness to both-feet-up-at-the-same-time bangers… Here are two 100% vinyl mixes from SD’s premier net DJ, sure to please even the most picky of vinyl lovers… Enjoy.

A quick Q&A with The P Man:

1) What is your musical background?

I started playing guitar when I was a kid, inpsired by my grandparents on my moms side , both of whom were musical. Later I switched to bass and played in bands and backing singers in San Diego and on tour around the US. Bands (and Singers) included, The Wallflowers (not Jakob Dylans band), The Morlocks, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Rick Saxton, Cholla, Steel Fish and Unsteady.

2) Can you give us the story on your radio shows on ReactFM and CybaFM? How did you get started with that?

In 2007 I started recording a lot of the shows from React.FM and uploading them to Barefiles and Getdarker. By the time the end of 2007 was approaching, I had been DJing for about six or seven months, I screwed up the nerve to talk to React.FM management about presenting a one off special on the station and if it went well – it turned into a weekly show. The first show was an amazing experience, I remember H.O.D and Arorah being locked on and talking to me on the MSN, and thinking how weird that was, since I was usually locked on to their shows. There was a lot of great talent on the station at the time, Urban Collective, Clue Kid, Orien, Ruff One, Fused Forces, a_k47 & Formula, Skunk Monk, Rusko, Reso, Anti-Social to name just a few. I felt really honored to be on the same station with all of them and always tried hard to present the best show I could. In summer of 2008 some of my other comittments made it difficult to present my show every week.

Around the same time I got word that a_k47 was starting a new station and started talking with him about starting up The P Man Show again. In February of 2009 I re-started The P Man show on Cyba Radio (now called Cyba.FM), nowadays I’ve got my work schedule arranged so I never have to miss a show(well, so far so good). The downloads and tracklists are available on my blog. I’m still getting a lot of unreleased material from Labels like Urban Graffiti, Mata-Syn and Poizend Audio, and producers like Orien, Devious, H.O.D – and I’m always soliciting more.

3) Does producing tunes change your track selection and taste?

Yeah, and it works the other way around too, DJing has definitely helped me make tunes that are more DJ friendly. But back to the question at hand, I know what kind of work goes in to quality tunes now, so I have more appreciation of producers who come with the goods. I think I’d probably select the same stuff if I wasn’t producing though. Producing is something I have to do, it was the same way when I was playing in bands, creating something new is very satisfying. I’ve been really focused on improving my mixing skills lately and as a result my production efforts have taken a bit of a back seat, but I’ve got some new music in the works, so be checkin’.

4) Who do you think is innovating and pushing the boundaries of dubstep at the moment?

I think Silkie is really pushing things to a high level of musicality and he’s got a very high work rate.
H.O.D is one of my favorites, also very, very musical and he’s almost maniacal about quality control. RSD, I’ve got everything of his that I could lay my hands on, I just love his tunes. Darqwan is another one who whenever I see his name on a tune, I just click “Buy” it’s worked out good so far. I’ve got some of his Dark Garage stuff too. Also DJ Orien, who has an amazing work rate and great quality control. Orien has the really deep musical tunes and the bangers both on lock. Kromestar also has an extremely high work rate and some of my favorite vibes. I’m highly looking forward to the release of the Kryptic Minds stuff, that mix they put out is great. There is tons of good stuff coming out these days, it’s kind of hard to keep up actually.

5) Top five records in your bag – all time?

This is gonna be hard, but here goes, records in no particular order,

DQ1Gud Money (Tectonic) I was checking for this when it came out and I still play it all the time, I’ve got 2 copies.

LoefahRufage (DMZ) Same as above, got it when it came out and I never got tired of it. The Flipside “Mud” is classic too.

Unknown - Say Yes (White Label) I love white label bootlegs and this one is one of my favorties. Massive Dubby bassline, amazing vocal courtesy of Floetry. The flip side (Dirty South) is nice for later in the evening too.

Digital MystiksHaunted/Anti War Dub (DMZ) Do I really need to explain this one.

MalaLean Forward (DMZ) I’ve been trying to stop playing this, to no avail.

6) Top five digitals on your hard drive – all time?

Digitals again no particular order,

H.O.DImpervious I also cut this to dubplate and bought the vinyl when it came out on mata-syn.

UnknownBasic Principles Dubstep remix of a DNB tune by Alex Reece, I’m not allowed to say who made this. Might have to cut this one at some point.

OrienPulse O I think this is out on DDJs recordings now. This is the official dubstep remix of Pulse X by Youngstar DDJs (hmm, maybe Pulse X should’ve been in the top vinyls…) one of my very favorite Wobble tunes.

DeviousWhite Sandy Beaches Massively deep vibes but still a skanker, my favorite kind of tune. Dev, I need to upgrade to a .wav on this pleeeease.

24k & DubzDub Is Shining Love this one. Dubstep refix of the Bob Marley classic “Sun Is Shining”

7) Where do you see San Diego’s scene going in the next year?

Seems to be on the rise. I’d like to see more of the DJs from here travelling to play gigs. Also It seems like SD producers from SD are starting to make some inroads. Time will tell I suppose. All I can say to my SD peeps is, if you love music, go out, have a few drinks, have a little dance, chill with your friends. C’mon it’s fun.

8 ) What’s this ‘dubstep gremlin’ thing all about?

Some of the ones that got fed after midnight were out and about last Saturday. Dubsteeeeeeep!

9. Shouts

Out to the full Cyba.FM family, management, listeners and all the DJs. Big up my full Southern California Crew. Big up the whole London Gang. Big up Mom and Dad.
