BrokenBeat PLATINUM Edition @ Kava Lounge [GLITCH|DUBSTEP|VISUALS|LIVE ART]

BrokenBeat is proud to bring you the first edition of our Platinum series.

This event will take place at the KAVA LOUNGE. We are proud to deliver a lineup of GLITCH and DUBSTEP that will include out-of-town artists from LOS ANGELES, ARIZONA and the UK.

If youve ever been to a BrokenBeat Night@Kadans you know that there will be VISUALS. For this event we have 2 badass guest vjs- FADER and CPU

We will also have LIVE ART by our good friend and badass artist GRIFFINONE. If you dont know, peep griffinone.com for a taste.

Mark your calendars… We are looking forward to this one….

MUSIC
…………………………
TOM BURBANK > Los Angeles
Planet-Mu | BrokenBeat
…………………………

http://www.myspace.com/tomburbank

Mixing left-field hip-hop with melodic electronica, producer/multi-instrumentalist Tom creates a sound somewhere between Prefuse 73, RJD2, & his labelmate Edit. The L.A. native was once a member of the Fela tribute band Afrobeat Down, and played numerous DJ sets up and down the California coast as a member of the BrokenBeat network. Burbank made his full-length debut in 2006 when Planet Mu label released Famous First Words.

…………………………
MASK > UK
Sonic Lodge
…………………………

http://www.myspace.com/maskedmusic

MASK is a member of the Cardiff UK based crew called Sonic Lodge (Monkey, Stagga, Magenta, P Dubz, Metabeats, etc..). Sonic Lodge itself started out as a local pirate radio show, but is now a label run partly by Monkey himself. The labels releases have tended towards dubstep but the third release will feature a glitch side.

Under his MASK moniker, productions tend towards housey dubstep and electronic hip hop. In addition to Sonic Lodge, MASK is a member of the Darkhouse Family, which is exclusively a future hip-hop project. This group is comprised of Don Leisure (formerly Jamal (Metalheadz, Tru Playaz, T.O.V.) , Metabeats (Associated Minds, Bigger Than Barry) and MASK. Expect an up coming E.P. release on Manchesters Fat City records (www.fatcityrecordings.com) and a feature on the Producer No. 2 compilation alongside the likes of Mike Slott, Mr. Dibiase, Dabrye.

Expect the unexpected, original UK productions fresh for BrokenBeat Platinum !

……………………….
PUPPY KICKER > San Diego
Rogue Dubs | BrokenBeat
…………………………

http://www.myspace.com/sandiegounderground

Puppy Kicker is half of one of San Diego’s best kept secrets… ARGYLE, and has been smashing sound systems all around the southwest. From the deserts to the warehouses, dropping dance floor bombs is PK’s specialty: bringing ungodly sub bass, mind bending drops as well as a wide array of unrealeased tunes and original material. PuppyKicker is about to make some international waves like a tsunami as he has releases scheduled to be out in Germany on BiggerDubz (formerly Barish) and the UKs DubFrequency Records.

…………………………
DR NICKEL > San Diego
TidePool Music
…………………………

http://www.myspace.com/drnickel

One of our favorite local producers, Dr Nickel emerges from his Ocean Beach laboratories to deliver some dirty, grimy, glitchy dubstep.

…………………………
MELOTRONIX > Arizona
Tempe
…………………………

http://www.melotronix.com

Ms Melotronix brings her own twist to the “art of noise”. Armed with her turntables, mixer, effects box and microphone, she blends heavy chunky funky bass lines with etheric ovetones (of flutes, harps, sitar, and more), while singing over her creation.
She has been dj-ing and producing her own music since 1999, so she comes to the stage with an arsenal of tracks that you will not hear anywhere else. Combining old-school classics and original tracks with the latest sounds selected by the mixtress, you will be taken on a sonic adventure that you will not soon forget.

VJ MR COCOON > Los Angeles
THE POLYAMOROUS AFFAIR
…………………………

http://www.innerspaceouterspace.com/

In an emerging world of live video artists, few have background and skill as impressive as David Cabrera AKA mr.cocoon.
With the performative approach of a live musician, his adaptable style has been described as psychedelic narrative, often referencing Nam June
Paik and late 60′s light shows. Using a combination of self-produced footage, found video and live-synthesized video sources, mr.cocoon has created a technique
of his own. His visual shows have been featured with DJs and bands and at clubs, underground parties, galleries and corporate events since
1995. As one of the most in-demand video artists, mr. cocoon performs in excess of 100 shows a year, spanning the globe.

His career as a live visualist began in San Francisco in 1995, where he performed interactive slide shows of his original photography. Often he used
upwards of seven overlapping projectors to create new textures and visual compositions. This setup has evolved into a custom
VJ Rig running both analog/digital and optical components.

David has mastered the art of live video mixing, generating live footage and also utilizing digital and optical feedback. His
particular collection of self-produced footage and rare visual art provides him with a one of a kind pallet in which he creates
captivating narratives that host a multitude of conceptual outcomes.

David is the live visualist for one of LA’s hottest emerging bands: The Polyamorous Affair.

GRIFFIN ONE
…………………………

http://www.griffinone.com/

Griffin has built a career for himself as a urban aerosol muralist, illustrator & logo designer. He continues to balance his focus between his own canvas work, as well as hand
full of underground T-shirt lines, independent record labels & live artistry locally & world-wide.

His graffiti-influenced style can be found on everything from skateboard trucks, sand rails, life-size fiberglass cows, iPhone games, night-club interior murals,
to walls in Greece and Switzerland. This inability to settle on any one medium or style is reflective of his approach to life in general. Staying true to his travel bug, Griffin’s journeys include a 3 week long European Hip-Hop music Tour with Awol-One and The Insects in February ’08, breaking the ice in overseas live artistry in 2008.

Griffin is a resident artist at the world famous Blunt Club – the premier Live Hip-Hop weekly event in the southwest US – & continues to do live art on-stage since his start in 2001 in San Diego.

We are very excited to have are old friend Griffin back in SD with his BrokenBeat fam

* VOTED BY CITYBEAT BEST INTELLIGENT DANCE MUSIC 2008

Best intelligent dance music

On the first Saturday of every month, inside the darkened den that is the castle-and-chess-themed Kadan Club (4696 30th St., Normal Heights), Walker Holland, Miguel Vega and Angelo Gastelum can be found reveling at the site of massive amounts of electronic gear.

“The more hardware and wires the better,” says Holland, the driving force behind BrokenBeat (www.brokenbeat.com), the name for both a club night featuring live experimental electronic music and visuals and the network of artists who create it.

For almost a decade, Holland and his collaborators have been putting on events in San Diego that spotlight the kind of electronic music you won’t find in Downtown clubs. A far cry from the repetitive beat-heavy house or trance music most people think of when they hear the words “electronic music,” BrokenBeat is all about “intelligent dance music” (IDM), specifically “glitch,” (a subgenre of experimental electronic music) and the live mixing and retooling of electronic-music tracks. If done correctly, it’s the kind of music that can get even the most mainstream-minded bar-goer on the dance floor.

“Angelo here is a great example of that,” says Vega, who’s recently joined BrokenBeat as the visual jockey (VJ) and who schedules other VJs to provide the live visuals for the night at Kadan. “When Angelo plays, everyone is on the dance floor.”

The typical lineup for a BrokenBeat night is three electronic DJs, one live electronic-music artist and one or two VJs who improvise with the music and fill three screens hanging on the walls of Kadan with graphics, live video feeds, animation and more.

“I’ve had nights where I’ve just stepped back and looked at it and thought, Wow, that’s cool,” Holland says. “Seeing people dancing inside those three screens, it’s like they’re dancing inside a giant television.”

“And the best part,” Gastelum adds, “is that we don’t charge. This is something we do out of love.”
