The P Man makes me laugh… A lot. When I go to his house for radio shows there is lasagna and cookies. He’s extremely knowledgeable with anything music or food – and those are two of my favorite things. He’s very respectful, and if I’ve had a few beers I’ll tell you repeatedly that he has a lot more records than you. Which he does. Check the selections… This is one of my favorite mixes so far on SDDubstep.

A Q&A with P Man

Louis Damian – Are you coming to the show at Casbah March 30th and are we gonna eat before or after the bands play?

P. Yes I am, And I think a trip to El Comal before the show might be in order.

Louis Damian – What are 3 non-musical things influencing yer sounds?

P. Everything in the world of the arts from cuisine, architecture, painting and just culture in general are an influence in the way I listen to music. The same qualities and values that attract me to a piece of music are present in other art forms.

Kyle E. Steinberg – Okay, I know EVERY interviewer asks this but, be concise original and COMPLETE in your answer. How do you find your cuts, beats, sounds, and rhythm, and what, who, and where do find inspiration for your mixes?

P. As far as the tunes that get selected, I’m always looking for new things to play. I listen to a few radio shows. The Fused Forces Show on CybaFM, The Terrafonix Show also on CybaFM, and The Poizend Audio show on InnacityFM.com are a few that I listen to pretty regularly. I’m always pestering friends of mine who produce and run record labels for new and unreleased tunes. I record shop (mostly on the internet) very regularly. I’m an unrepentant trainspotter as well, any time I can get a look at what other DJs who I enjoy are playing I always try and avail myself. As far as the inspiration for what tunes to mix at any given time, it’s a little different depending on the situation (radio, playing out, podcasts). Playing out is usually the most spontaneous situation. I always try and find the right tune to play a given time and place. Most important of all for me though is this, I play the tunes that I like, there’s not too much point otherwise. DJing for me is just an extension of my desire to share music I love with other people. This podcast is of a snapshot of some of the tunes I’ve been playing out and on radio lately.

Cameron Pryor – How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?

I have been showcasing a lot of local talent in the last 6 podcasts, but I felt it was time to branch out. We get to see a lot of local talent at our shows… But rarely any stateside talent from outside California. I got a chance to chat with Searchl1te, who’s a very busy man in the Chicago area. Searchl1te has been making moves in the scene for over a decade, has been playing shows all around the US, hosts an FM radio show in Chicago, and keeps a full time gig helping the community. A pretty inspiring dude… Not to mention, he has some really sick tunes, and knows how to put them together properly. A proper start to showcasing some other US talent!

A Q&A with Searchl1te

by EshOne

What did you grow up listening to?

In chronological order, C is for Cookie by the Cookie Monster, Animal massacring the drums on the Muppet Show. Disco, the Oak Ridge Boys, Bob Segar, and ZZ Top courtesy of my parents. My first 45 was Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue”. Then tapes… Lionel Richie, Grandmaster Flash, Fat Boys, Run DMC. Classic rock radio, German techno, early electronic music like Edgar Varese. True school hip hop, Whiny indie shit. Industrial and noise. Jungle and breakcore. Kuduro and cumbia. Lately, all music in the dub and breakbeat diaspora as it travels and gets reinvented. This list is really endless.

What is your day job?

Director of the Free Write Jail Arts and Literacy Program. I teach reading, creative writing, music production, and I program arts experiences for youth incarcerated in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. Check out the site and some of my students’ work – www.freewritejailarts.org

Best party you ever played?

One gig I remember fondly was the first big party I threw. January 1999 @ a VFW in Morgantown, West Virginia. We packed 1200 people into that place…thirsty ravers, metal heads, indie freaks, my parents. I played at 2am in the basement, where all the jungle was, and ran ragga and amen bizness until the drop-ceiling panels started to crumble, the vets sipping Iron City in the bar caught the ghost, and the kids on the floor sweat through their pants. My dad was running around with a camera getting groups of candy kids to pose by telling them he was a photographer from “Rave.com”.

Describe your local scene:

I’m not much of a scene whore, but I can tell you that Chicago is SOLID. There are so many opportunities to get involved with music on every level. At this moment, I help run two radio shows (Part Time Sucker Radio on WNUR 89.3 Fm and www.Dubstep.Fm), dj out somewhere in the city a few times a month at various venues (Smartbar, Lava Lounge, Empty Bottle, Darkroom, Double Door, Rodan, etc), do big sound for parties, run recording sessions for musicians, am helping to build two studios, help run a label (Dubfront Records), do live collaborations (Chicago Sewer), throw events (Dubfront Sessions @ Darkroom). The fact that so many viable opportunities are available to me makes me feel like this scene is pretty damn healthy.

Where do you think dubstep and bass music is headed for the rest of 2010?

Bass music is gonna continue to stay LOW as it makes it’s way around the world. I want to hear obscure traditional music combined with the bass music production aesthetic.

Who are your favorite producers right now?

Maga Bo is helping to bring seemingly disparate elements into intense cohesion. Douster’s wobbly stuff is off the chain. Sub Swara is completely killing it with their musicianship and dancefloor sensibility. Wachs Lyrical tactfully merges the beautiful with the devastating. I’m always getting something fresh and inspiring from Claw / Trillbass. Kush Arora is a maaaad thinker. The Abominable Twitch, who is my partner in the live PA project we call Chicago Sewer, is a fuckin’ savant. Also, MC Zulu does collabs with many on this list…most any track he touches turns into a partysmasher.

DJs?

Chrissy Murderbot, Jeekoos, Dj C, Chris Widman of Abstract Science, Ryan Organ and Craig Monkeytek, Joe Nice, Dj Rekha dropped some hot bhangra/dancehall biz in Chi last weekend, The Heatwave, El G as he’s dropping all the ZZK family badness, m50 aka Area with the minimal techno fuckery, MC Zulu is getting into dj’ing and I can’t wait for his palette of tunes to see the light of day…all these folks teach me things each time I hear them play. Of course there are many more…

A few of the top dubs in the bag atm:

I included a gang of my favorite dubs in this mix….the rest are TOP SECRET bwah. Nah, there is one more that has been in nearly every set of mine for the past few months: Mochipet – Complex Players (Sub Swara RMX) forthcoming on 6 Degrees. Holy shit this tune.

A lot of people in SD have yet to see the elusive “Misk” grace the crowds of a party… but everyone knows the name. He’s the man behind a lot of dancefloor smashers that have lit up the local venues. Tunes such as ‘Uplink’, ‘Alabaster’, and ‘Facedown in the Muck’ have all made their appearance – and made the name Misk a must for any record bag or tune library. I’ve been lucky enough to know Misk for the past 5 years, and have learned a lot from this dude. He’s a pretty rad guy, and a hell of a producer.

A Q&A with Misk

by EshOne

What is your musical background?

I don’t really have much of a musical background. I played bassoon in fourth grade band, but I hated practicing, so I’d just kind of fake it during school concerts. Come to think of it, i really dont know what compelled me to think that writing music would be a good idea.

Where did you grow up? How do you think this affects your music and creativity?

Well, I was born in California, but I moved around a lot when I was growing up. My stepfather worked in the oil industry, and he had an offer to work overseas. I ended up living in Saudi Arabia for about 3 years, and Kuwait for about 2 years. I did a brief 2 year stint in Louisiana as well, near New Orleans. I was exposed to a lot of different music when I lived in the middle east. everything from Iraqi folk music, Kuwaiti sword dancing, and traditional drumming, to turkish pop music, Klezmer, and many other cultures in between. Not to mention all the blues, jazz and zydeco music of the south. I suppose that on some level, all my music is created at that point in my mind where all these influences intersect.

What is your musical process?

My process is nice and straightforward to me, but probably pretty convoluted to everyone else. I usually start with some drums first, as they’re sort of like the backbone of the tune to me. Then I add more and more to those drums.. melodies, bass, counter melodies, whatever.

I tend to do a lot of sound design with soft synths and hardware synths when I’m writing a tune, as opposed to just sitting down and making a bunch of patches at a different time. To me, the whole writing process is very organic, and I’m more likely to write something that works in the context of the piece I’m working on when I’m in that creative space.

The most important thing I’ve learned about myself through music though, is to not second guess where the process is taking me. I try to just go with what I’m writing and worry about questioning it later. This allows me to actually finish music consistently, and shut off my mind so I can just be in the moment. It’s all very Zen-like apparently! I find my best tunes are ones that I don’t even remember making, like I’m done, and i listen back to it and wonder how the hell i made that… then I get to wonder if I’m going to be able to make something that good again.

Its a lovely never ending struggle that I don’t recommend to anyone. Some days I’d rather be like a zookeeper or something.

We want some secrets… tell us a bit about your studio setup.

Well my studio is pretty simple. I’ve got a computer running Renoise 2.1, a few soft synths, some decent monitors, a Roland super JV-1080, a Gameboy running Nanoloop 1.5 and some drum machines. I don’t really have any secret kung fu writing techniques, but I think it’s important to write stuff every day, never be content with anything less than your best, and constantly push yourself beyond your self-imposed boundaries. Oh, and drink LOTS of coffee. Good coffee, from a french press.

What music has shaped your taste throughout the years?

Older Nine Inch Nails. none of that new stuff really. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam. That whole grunge era, I’m kinda from that time, and listened to a lot of that stuff when I was younger. 90′s era Orbital, Dom and Roland, Photek, 8 bit Nintendo music, Meat Beat Manifesto, Dead Can Dance, Joy Division, Tom Waits, The Doors, stuff like that.

You are sighted at events around the same number of times as a Loch Ness sighting… How do you keep a grasp on what people want to hear?

Haha! Do I? thats nice to know! I dont know how i do that. I guess just put your ear to the ground anywhere and you can hear the bass rumbling from the depths. Apparently we’re quite the global community these days, I’ve heard.

What do you think is in the future for dubstep/bass music?

A lot of artists came together to create this new strain of music the media called “Dubstep”. I feel that those people, as well as the people they have influenced, like myself, have dispersed back into the night. I see a lot of little sub genres emerging, like “future garage”, “wonky”, “street bass”, and others. What I think is unique though, is that all these little pockets of artists are feeding off of the same post-dubstep energy, and it’s really exciting. You’ve got this new melting pot of different styles that seems to be coalescing around 140 bpm. I dont know exactly what will come of it, but it feels real, it feels independent, and it feels vibrant. I look forward to what the future holds.

What producers would you say to look out for these days?

As always, so much good music to look out for these days. The latest stuff i’ve heard from Both EshOne and Puppykicker is great. Groovekiller, that guy is incredible! Ultragamma, Richard Sweat, too. I’m sure I’m forgetting people…

Shouts.

Shout out to EshOne, Puppy Kicker, and the whole San Diego dubstep crew. I’ll continue to emerge from the mists of the loch to come to your shows once in a full moon. XI, Vaccine, Hera, Dub U, Kidlogic, Joe Nice, Two Oh One, Wes from Terminal Dusk, FSTZ, the Rogue Dubs/Plates Master! Also, out to everyone playing my tunes, I am humbled to know people appreciate what I’m doing.

EshOne Dubstep - San Diego - DJ/Producer

Click to download:
SDDUBSTEP.COM Exclusive Mix #5 by EshOne | (52:36) | 320 Kbps Mp3

I first met EshOne through myspace sometime around late 2007 early 2008. I was introduced by a few different mutual friends. Shortly thereafter he sent me a bunch of tunes he had made and asked for my comments on them. I sent him back honest critiques on all the tunes he sent me, half expecting not to hear back or to get back some nasty message explaining to me why my critiques were faulty and what a great producer he really was (as has happened to me many times when commenting on tunes that people have posted on the dubstep forum asking for critique). To my surprise and pleasure, I received a message back thanking me for the critiques. Since that time he’s been very generous in sending me tunes, and his production skills have improved consistently. He’s an affable guy, an excellent DJ and producer, and a pretty good skater I’m told. If you haven’t already done so, go cop Rogue Dubs 10 http://www.digital-tunes.net/releases/roguedubs_ten and be checking for future releases and DJ appearances.

A Q&A with EshOne

by Puppy & P Man:

What’s the deal with Argyle ?

Argyle is quite possibly the hottest new deal on the SoCal dubstep circuit. In a nutshell, it’s just two producers from San Diego who are trying to close the space between people on the dance floor. This is a very intricate process though, it involves bringing excessive amounts of bass, Leggitt cigarettes, Folgers, and MicroKorg.

What are your plans for the future ?

Ohhhh… Watch for myself along with Austin Speed and PuppyKicker if you are in the southwest US, we are doing a mini tour starting in Albuquerque on November 19th.

As far as production goes, I would like to keep making tunes at the rate that I have been recently, as well as work on some other collabs that I have going. I’m working on tunes with PuppyKicker(we are Argyle), The P Man, Miguex, and hopefully Austin Speed here in SD – and across the pond, I’m looking to work with Djinn on a tune or two in the near future.

Release wise, I am looking forward to hearing Texas Pete, and a collab with Misk, Facedown in the Muck on 12″. They will make up Rogue Plates 001, the vinyl arm of Rogue Dubs based out of KC. The label is headed by FSTZ, an SD local who we need to bring back for a set very soon.

So you’re a vinyl purist… no serato or anything. Is there a specific reason you choose not to use the new digital options for Dj’ing ?

I don’t only play vinyl! I play a lot of dubplates too, hahahaha. It’s not that I’ve chosen not to use them, it’s that I’ve not chosen to use them… I have nothing against them, and sometimes I envy the ease of taking a tune that you just got, and playing it for a crowd on the same day. A few of my reasons would have to be that I like to have some drank when I play, and that just won’t mix with a computer, so that’s out… and also I need the hands on of vinyl, so CDs are out. Getting a box of records or acetate in the mail is a good feeling as well. Dubplates smell really good. Plus it seems that every show I have been to lately the computer crashes, falls off a table, or the CDJ overheats or something… I just like to keep it easy and throw a disc on the platter. You already gotta deal with those needles, and cables and stuff.

Who are some of your favorite producers right now ?

I’m really feelin El-B and the Ghost Recordings camp. That organic style is just incredibly good and simple. Why didn’t I think of it!?!? Quantum Soul, Bar 9, Hatcha, Synkro, Kromestar, Monkey, Orien, Dubfiction, Richie August, Kutz, Djinn, 12th Planet, as well as Tapir and all the SD locals… Some serious heat is building down here.

How would you describe your style to someone who was unfamiliar with your music ?

Complex rhythms, big bass, techy and makes you want to move. I like to think that painters decorate canvases, and musicians decorate time and space with vibrations… I like to think the vibes my music puts out are good, but a lot of the time I’m working out my frustrations and disappointments through some angry basslines or something. It’s really all about intentions and how the listener receives it, I just wanna make people dance!

Didn’t you used to play DNB and Hip Hop ?

Yes! I recently did a dnb set at the AC Lounge. I got into that stuff when I was in high school growing up in Albuquerque. I did a few shows here and there, but got more into the production side of things because I wasn’t 21 at the time and couldn’t go out to the bars and such. I also practiced turntablism for a while and did a few studio cuts for some local hip hop artists (8 West) – I never really played hip hop out though, just at house parties and things like that.

When did you start Djing / producing dubstep ?

I started making dubstep tunes in 2006, when I got word of the dubstep forum. It’s [the forum] been essential for networking, and was a basic inspiration for a lot of what I have been doing. I will say that I was pretty into dnb and hip hop at that time, and was not all that impressed by the dubstep I had heard until I heard one of Excision’s mixes(06 summer mix – you all know it). After that I was hooked and started digging into the UK sound for more. Djing came later, in 2008 because I didn’t have all that much vinyl, and wasn’t really aware of the dubstep scene in SD – I thought I was alone! I still really don’t play that much though.

Have you ever produced in other styles besides Dubstep ?

I originally started with dnb, but I’ve made tracks of all sorts: techno, house, hip hop, breaks, ambient… I have not released anything besides dubstep, although there is a full length DIY sort of album that Misk and I did a couple years back with painted artwork and everything that had some experimental type tunes on it. It’s floating around SD somewhere.

Any plans to do so in the future ?

Sure! I’ve got some serious minimal techno stuff that I never show anyone, but I feel so out of touch with that scene that I’m not sure if the listeners will be accepting of my tunes. I think they sound like they are from ten years ago.

What’s your drug of choice ?

Can’t say till it’s legalized here.

Talk about some of the events you’ve helped put on in SD .

A couple years back I was working with Misk and doing a monthly show at the Whistle Stop in south park. We’d play dubstep and downtempo, and occasionally some dnb. We ran into some complications with bookings and stuff and let that one die. Now, I like to promote all the San Diego dubstep events i know about on this site – but in particular, the two shows I have put on with Sublmnl were Dub Smugglers:UK with DJ Kutz and The Invasion with Sukh Knight. Both of these events were insanely fun, and I want to do more in the future.

Do you play any instruments ?

I played acoustic and electric guitar starting when I was 7 years old. I got serious about it and started a few bands when I was around 13, starting with punk rock and moved forward to a ‘blues/metal fusion’ that was the signature sound of my band throughout high school. We played in our garages and around Albuquerque until I moved back to San Diego in 2004.

What other music scenes have you been involved in ?

I’ve done some recording for local punk bands in New Mexico, most recently I recorded a demo for The Twenty 2s in Las Vegas, NM. I also like to check out different scenes here in SD, I have friends in a few indie bands, including Recordable Colors, Buried Under Carrots, The Morning on Fire (I promise I’ll make it to a show soon) and a few others. I always have a good time when there’s music playing and I’m holding a pint!

How long have you lived in SD ? How do you think the places you’ve lived have affected your music ?

I was born here, but grew up in New Mexico. I lived in the mountains of northern NM for 5 years or so when I was real young, then in Albuquerque for 10 years. I have always had family and friends in SD, so I was back and forth all the time. I think growing up in NM gave me a sense of self at a pretty early age, so I branched off into listening to weird stuff quite a bit earlier than most people I knew at the time. I think that, combined with living on the west side of Albuquerque and going to West Mesa HS has definitely put some creativity and a dirtier edge to some of my music. Moving back to SD has smoothed out my sound a lot, as well as put in a lot of danceability. I’m trying to make sexier, bouncier, club style tunes now, and it’s a lot of fun.

Top 5 dubs in the bag

El-B/Ghost – Think your greezy
Clone A Side – For the paradise (PuppyKicker remix)
Richie August – Smash dat
Djinn – Solace
Argyle – Dark krystal

Top 5 vinyls in the bag

These are all old, but I like them a lot:
Cluekid – Hovercraft
Hatcha & Kromestar – 1919
Monkey – Volume VIP
12th Planet – 68
Skream – Stagger

Dog person or cat person?

Doggers all day, I love Pickel.

Coffee or tea?

Espresso or Oolong.

Favorite rave you played at?

Dub Smugglers:UK closing for Kutz. I was having the worst night – stress from the event, and loads of personal drama, and I didn’t even want to play. I had a few of those famous Jamaican Red pints, and threw down the Roguestar(I think?) refix of Come Around, and when the bassline hit I instantly forgot about everything that was bothering me, and I just killed it. It was unreal- Kutz wheeled back my tune You Wont, I never thought shit like that would happen in my life, it has been a laptop hobby for some time now… It’s amazing when things build to something larger than life! I was stoked on how the system at Kava sounded that night, and I had a lot of friends there who had never even heard dubstep before… It was a great session and definitely stands out for me. Kava Lounge.

What’s your favorite fast food ?

Taco shops all day. I love hot sauce. I love burritos. I love Mexican food period. Only thing better is New Mexican food, but that’s a whole new interview.

A quick Q&A with Puppy:

It’s been a while, how are you?

I’m good. Just been makin tunes, tryin to get the name out there a bit. Got a couple tunes comin out on Rogue Dubs next month. And a vinyl release on Rogue Plates comin out in a couple months. So good. Really good.

How would you say the dubstep scene in SD has grown and developed in the last year?

Well… it’s def been making some serious strides. We’ve had a couple really big names come through town, which has been great. The people down here are def starting to catch on to the sound and really seeming to appreciate what we’re offering. Which is a small but VERY strong and diverse talent pool. I’d say we’ve developed from a baby in a crib to a baby that’s learning to crawl around and get into stuff… it’s not gonna be too long now before we are jumping ramps on our bmx bikes in the street. We’re growing so fast.

Who should we be lookin out for?

SD in general… Austin Speed, EshOne, MSK, Dr. Nickels, Tapir, Myself. We’re takin over!

How did the name Beaverhausen come about?

hahahahahahaha….

I met a beautiful young woman at a day party here in San Diego. She told me her name was Anastasia Beaverhausen. I was inspired by her, so I named a tune after her.

Any upcoming collabs or projects we should know about?

Um… yeah! I’ve been collabing with Esh under the name “Argyle”. We’ve been making some really cool tunes. I def have been enjoying working with him… the tunes just some out so naturally. I’ve also been working with Tapir. We don’t really have a name yet but I think we may call ourselves “The Z List”. Also, my boy Austin Speed has been making some CRAZY mash ups w/ Calulon & Whizard.

What’s your favorite after-the-bar taco shop, and why?

Ohhh… that’s a hard one… the first answer is… The one that’s still open! But if a had a choice it would either be Santana’s on Rosecrans because they are consistantly good, have great sauce and don’t seem like they will spit in my burrito. The other would be Lucha Libre’s… They’ve got these gourmet burritos that are fuckin INSANE good, not to mention that the whole place is decked out in Luchador masks and champion belts and stuff… Oh! and they’ve got a tv that premanently has Ron Burgendy on the screen.. Now THAT’S some good San Diego lovin right thr’!

Shouts:

Well everyone I’ve mentioned already… Austin Speed, EshOne, Tapir, MSK, Dr. Nixs, um… LL Beaverhausen, ROGUE DUBS, Big Up Magazine, Broken Beat fam, everyone who comes out and shows love and support.. (I feel like I’m doin my thank you speech after the Emmy’s or some shit) MY GRAMA!!! fo sho! sddubstep.com

The first time I heard The P Man (Paul Howland) was on ReactFM when he released his React special mix with all talent from that station… He had a ton of originals and some great exclusive tunes from a lot of the talented people who are now starting to blow up. He now has a weekly show on Cyba.fm, Tuesdays at 2PM PST.

I first met Paul at the Joe Nice edition of Dub Smugglers, up in front the whole show and sportin CDs of original tunes to give out to the DJs. He’s a cool, down to earth guy, with great taste in tunes and always down to shoot the shit with whoever’s around. Paul’s got tons of vinyl, ranging from super dubbed out deepness to both-feet-up-at-the-same-time bangers… Here are two 100% vinyl mixes from SD’s premier net DJ, sure to please even the most picky of vinyl lovers… Enjoy.

A quick Q&A with The P Man:

1) What is your musical background?

I started playing guitar when I was a kid, inpsired by my grandparents on my moms side , both of whom were musical. Later I switched to bass and played in bands and backing singers in San Diego and on tour around the US. Bands (and Singers) included, The Wallflowers (not Jakob Dylans band), The Morlocks, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Rick Saxton, Cholla, Steel Fish and Unsteady.

2) Can you give us the story on your radio shows on ReactFM and CybaFM? How did you get started with that?

In 2007 I started recording a lot of the shows from React.FM and uploading them to Barefiles and Getdarker. By the time the end of 2007 was approaching, I had been DJing for about six or seven months, I screwed up the nerve to talk to React.FM management about presenting a one off special on the station and if it went well – it turned into a weekly show. The first show was an amazing experience, I remember H.O.D and Arorah being locked on and talking to me on the MSN, and thinking how weird that was, since I was usually locked on to their shows. There was a lot of great talent on the station at the time, Urban Collective, Clue Kid, Orien, Ruff One, Fused Forces, a_k47 & Formula, Skunk Monk, Rusko, Reso, Anti-Social to name just a few. I felt really honored to be on the same station with all of them and always tried hard to present the best show I could. In summer of 2008 some of my other comittments made it difficult to present my show every week.

Around the same time I got word that a_k47 was starting a new station and started talking with him about starting up The P Man Show again. In February of 2009 I re-started The P Man show on Cyba Radio (now called Cyba.FM), nowadays I’ve got my work schedule arranged so I never have to miss a show(well, so far so good). The downloads and tracklists are available on my blog. I’m still getting a lot of unreleased material from Labels like Urban Graffiti, Mata-Syn and Poizend Audio, and producers like Orien, Devious, H.O.D – and I’m always soliciting more.

3) Does producing tunes change your track selection and taste?

Yeah, and it works the other way around too, DJing has definitely helped me make tunes that are more DJ friendly. But back to the question at hand, I know what kind of work goes in to quality tunes now, so I have more appreciation of producers who come with the goods. I think I’d probably select the same stuff if I wasn’t producing though. Producing is something I have to do, it was the same way when I was playing in bands, creating something new is very satisfying. I’ve been really focused on improving my mixing skills lately and as a result my production efforts have taken a bit of a back seat, but I’ve got some new music in the works, so be checkin’.

4) Who do you think is innovating and pushing the boundaries of dubstep at the moment?

I think Silkie is really pushing things to a high level of musicality and he’s got a very high work rate.
H.O.D is one of my favorites, also very, very musical and he’s almost maniacal about quality control. RSD, I’ve got everything of his that I could lay my hands on, I just love his tunes. Darqwan is another one who whenever I see his name on a tune, I just click “Buy” it’s worked out good so far. I’ve got some of his Dark Garage stuff too. Also DJ Orien, who has an amazing work rate and great quality control. Orien has the really deep musical tunes and the bangers both on lock. Kromestar also has an extremely high work rate and some of my favorite vibes. I’m highly looking forward to the release of the Kryptic Minds stuff, that mix they put out is great. There is tons of good stuff coming out these days, it’s kind of hard to keep up actually.

5) Top five records in your bag – all time?

This is gonna be hard, but here goes, records in no particular order,

DQ1Gud Money (Tectonic) I was checking for this when it came out and I still play it all the time, I’ve got 2 copies.

LoefahRufage (DMZ) Same as above, got it when it came out and I never got tired of it. The Flipside “Mud” is classic too.

Unknown - Say Yes (White Label) I love white label bootlegs and this one is one of my favorties. Massive Dubby bassline, amazing vocal courtesy of Floetry. The flip side (Dirty South) is nice for later in the evening too.

Digital MystiksHaunted/Anti War Dub (DMZ) Do I really need to explain this one.

MalaLean Forward (DMZ) I’ve been trying to stop playing this, to no avail.

6) Top five digitals on your hard drive – all time?

Digitals again no particular order,

H.O.DImpervious I also cut this to dubplate and bought the vinyl when it came out on mata-syn.

UnknownBasic Principles Dubstep remix of a DNB tune by Alex Reece, I’m not allowed to say who made this. Might have to cut this one at some point.

OrienPulse O I think this is out on DDJs recordings now. This is the official dubstep remix of Pulse X by Youngstar DDJs (hmm, maybe Pulse X should’ve been in the top vinyls…) one of my very favorite Wobble tunes.

DeviousWhite Sandy Beaches Massively deep vibes but still a skanker, my favorite kind of tune. Dev, I need to upgrade to a .wav on this pleeeease.

24k & DubzDub Is Shining Love this one. Dubstep refix of the Bob Marley classic “Sun Is Shining”

7) Where do you see San Diego’s scene going in the next year?

Seems to be on the rise. I’d like to see more of the DJs from here travelling to play gigs. Also It seems like SD producers from SD are starting to make some inroads. Time will tell I suppose. All I can say to my SD peeps is, if you love music, go out, have a few drinks, have a little dance, chill with your friends. C’mon it’s fun.

8 ) What’s this ‘dubstep gremlin’ thing all about?

Some of the ones that got fed after midnight were out and about last Saturday. Dubsteeeeeeep!

9. Shouts

Out to the full Cyba.FM family, management, listeners and all the DJs. Big up my full Southern California Crew. Big up the whole London Gang. Big up Mom and Dad.

A quick Q&A with Austin Speed:

How did you get into electronic music?

When I was about 13 or 14 years old I was listening to a lot of heavy metal and hardcore and I was trading cds with a friend who was into a lot industrial music like Scorn, KMFDM, Front Line Assembly, etc. I was intrigued knowing that most of that music was being done with synthesizers, samplers and/or computers. From there it was pretty much a natural progression on to techno, drum n’ bass and IDM.

How long have you been producing?

On and off for well over ten years now. I’ve gone through several different setups ranging from full hardware to using just a computer, which is pretty much where I’m at right now. I was producing techno for a while, but I’ve just started seriously producing dubstep within the last year.

What’s your ritual in the studio?

It’s a little bit different every time. Sometimes I’ll start by laying down some drums, then building the bassline and lead around that. Other times I’ll start with a sample that gets me inspired, or I’ll start playing a riff on the keyboard and keep adding more layers. From there, it’s just about getting the arrangement down, then a process of eqing and compression to get everything sitting right in the mix. One thing that I’ve found that works for me is to not force anything when it comes to production. If I’m not getting the sound or vibe that I’m going after, or if I’m hitting a wall on a tune I’ll just take a break then come back to it later with a refreshed perspective.

Who has made the biggest impact on you musically?

I’d be hard pressed to narrow that down, but I’d have to say that some of the older Autechre records really changed the way that I thought about music. The way that they use such abstract sounds to build deep sonic landscapes is really incredible. Another artist that inspired me quite a bit is Speedy J because of the sheer raw energy of his productions. More recently I saw Skream perform at a Pure Filth show in LA towards the end of 2007 and that was my major turning point in shifting my musical focus towards dubstep.

How do you see yourself, and San Diego in general contributing to the dubstep scene?

I co-founded an event production company called Sublmnl Sound System that I run with my partner, CRMNL, with the goal of throwing quality dubstep events in the San Diego area. We’ve hosted events with Joe Nice, Roommate, Djunya, SPL, and we’re bringing down Noah D in June. We’ve just started a monthly summer series that will feature a headliner at every show. We’d like to eventually see San Diego turn into a major hub for touring artists. As far as San Diego in general, there are some very talented producers from here that are starting to get national and international exposure.

How do you feel about the amalgamation of dubstep and techno?

Coming from a techno background I think it’s great to see the two genres cross-pollinating with each other. A few of the releases on Apple Pips, Hotflush and 7even are starting to bridge the gap. I’ve also started to notice more people that I knew from the techno community starting to come out to dubstep shows and they’re really getting into the sound.

I noticed you always wear fancy t-shirts, where do you buy them?

Ha ha! Yeah, that’s one of my guilty pleasures! Nordstrom’s usually.

What producers/dj’s are you feeling lately?

One of my favorites at the moment is DJG from San Francisco, he’s got a really nice techy sound and his production quality is incredible. A few others that come to mind are Subscape, 501, Von D, Truth, Mala and of course Jakes.

Thanks to FSTZ, PuppyKickerCRMNL, Pure Boom HI-FI, Haleigh, and Katya, for the last minute questions :)

A quick Q&A with PK:

Have you been feelin’ the colly vibes or coke vibes in dubstep lately?

hahahah.. is that a real question!? Well… I must say, as much as I’m a collie man myself, it’s that banging hard nasty shit that got me into dubstep in the first place.  But then again I def. have a place in my heart for that rollin bass smoked out shit as well…. i like it all.

Do you think the amalgamation of rap and dubstep is the future direction of the genre?

I think that it already is,  And not just with hip hop/rap. One of my favorite things about dubstep as a genre is that it seems to encompass every style of music. Everything just seems to fit in there somehow, and I think it will continue to morph and shape into new dimensions & styles.

How big do you see dubstep becoming in the world of electronic music, or music in general?

It’s def picking up pace as we speak. You’re seeing more and more mainstream artists & “brand name” dj’s either commissioning dubstep remixes or playing/producing dubstep tunes..Freq Nasty, Bassnectar, Diplo, Z trip and countless others are playing dubstep in their sets. Then you have people like Kanye West giving stems to Rusko or Snoop hooking up (if you can call it that) with Chase & Status. So we’ll see, it def seems to be catching on.

What are the pros/cons of dubstep being more underground in the states?

I really wouldn’t know… I can say there’s a lot of competition for a small market in the states. But there’s a lot more respect for the music in Europe.  Maybe I can get some gigs over there and answer that question later ;)

What other music do you listen to besides dubstep?

it would be easier to say what i don’t listen to… radio country! When I was growing up my mom def. encouraged me to listen to and appreciate all types of stuff. I like/listen to everything… jazz, jambands, funk, disco, classical hip hop, all genres of electronic, punk,  I was in deathmetal bands in high school, I love some shit-kickin bluegrass, classic rock, world music, reggae, bollywood tunes… the list could go on forever.

Has production changed the way you listen to music?  And how?

Hmmmm… well I guess it makes me a bit more critical of the production value of tunes. But I’ve always listened to music w/ a bit of a musicians ear.  It doesn’t always have to be the best produced song in the world for me to like it. I mean, listen to some old Bad Religion or Sex Pistols.. horribly produced songs by anyones measure, but a good song is a good song. That doesn’t really answer the question though…. short answer is… not really.

What’s your weirdest experience since you have started DJing?

Hahahah… I probably shouldn’t say this but… I got a little mouth hug one time while playing at a warehouse party in L.A. And on that note.. Puppy OUT!

Thanks to FSTZ, Hera, CRMNL, Pure Boom HI-FI, Brad L., and Misk for the last minute questions :)
